From Minister to Serial Entrepreneur to Government Staffing Expert

Rob Kurz didn't take a traditional path to becoming the government staffing industry's secret weapon. His journey started at age 15 with his first business, then wound through churches, theological schools, and non-profits before landing him exactly where he needed to be.

The Early Years: Building Teams in the Hardest Places

For years, Rob recruited, mentored, and trained relief and development teams for some of the most disadvantaged places on earth. He established international partnerships to fund development in South Asia and North Africa.

He got really good at finding the right people for impossible situations.

The Pivot: Enter Commercial Recruiting

In 2006, Rob entered the commercial recruiting space, focusing on retail and clinical pharmacy. He landed the first-ever contract with Walmart Pharmacy (he wrote it for them himself) and went on to staff all major pharmacy companies: Walgreens, CVS, Eckerd, Kroger, Safeway, RiteAid, plus numerous hospital systems.

Along the way, he built and operated a credentialing service, a research company, and multiple job boards.

Then 2009 happened.

The Recession That Changed Everything

The 2009 recession gutted the recruiting industry overnight. Rob watched countless "successful" firms collapse because no one was hiring.

Except for one buyer: the federal government.

At the 2009 NAPS Convention, Rob spoke about recruiting trends and suggested the biggest growth sector would be government staffing. But there was a problem: the space was dominated by massive players, making it nearly impossible for small independent shops to compete.

The Solution: Level the Playing Field

Rob took his own advice and discovered an unexploited niche: helping small government staffing contractors compete against the giants.

He built KurzSolutions from the ground up as a complete RPO system designed specifically for federal contractors. While other firms dabbled in government staffing, Rob made it his entire focus.

Since 2009, KurzSolutions has become the only RPO focused exclusively on government staffing. We've helped over 100 firms build their businesses in an industry where 90% fail.

The Credentials

I abhor self-promotion," Rob says. But his work speaks for itself.

He holds two doctorates in what he calls "obscure disciplines," is a Certified Personnel Consultant (CPC) and Certified Employee Retention Specialist (CERS), and was among the first NAPS members to earn the CERS designation.

More important than any credential is this: 

Rob understands that recruiting is sales, not HR. It's about finding people who aren't looking, convincing them to consider opportunities they didn't know existed, and selling them on positions that aren't always easy sells.
Most government contractors view recruiting as a compliance function buried in HR. That's exactly backward.

Rob built KurzSolutions around one insight:

 In government staffing, past performance is everything. You can't build the "Golden Halo" of excellent past performance without consistently filling positions with quality candidates who stay.

That requires a sales organization, not a compliance department.
